SUMMARY:[:fr]ISA Montreal - Applying Edge Analytics on Rotating Equipment for Predictive Maintenance[:]
DESCRIPTION:Joint OnPoint Session between ISA Montreal and ChemPID Division \nPresenters:  \n\nJack Hancock:  Solution Consultant\, Rockwell Automation. Jack has 25 years of experience working in automation.  He focuses on digital transformation for industrial companies with technologies like IIoT\, Edge applications\, Analytics\, MES and DCS.\nRichard Resseguie: Product Manager\, Analytics (AI & ML)\, Rockwell Automation.\n\nAbstract: \nIn today’s fast-paced and ever-changing industrial environment\, minimizing operating costs and maximizing yield are critical to success.  When plant equipment goes down due to a failure\, both key performance indicators are impacted.   Maintenance teams regularly rely on mature maintenance techniques that focus on scheduled maintenance planning and periodic equipment inspection to keep equipment running. \n One of the most common industrial devices are AC induction motors which are frequently controlled by variable frequency drives (VFD).  As VFD’s become increasingly intelligent and AI technology evolves. new maintenance techniques have emerged to predict failures prior to their occurrence. \n Today’s topic will explore the concepts of motor current signature analysis (MCSA) and how AI can interpret it.  Using a machine learning based supervisory application\, we can establish a baseline of each asset’s behavior under normal operating conditions.  Then\, it monitors the assets for any deviation from baseline.  Once a deviation is detected\, a notification can be sent to maintenance which can include the anomalies first principle faults like: angular misalignment\, bearing fault\, flow restrictions\, cavitation and others depending on the application. \nEvent Recording in ISA Connect \nTrung Nguyen\, ing. \nISA Montreal – Section President \n

DESCRIPTION:Speed and accuracy of information is more important than ever. When it comes to calibration this has never been truer. Increased regulation\, oversight and the demand for up-to-the-minute data requires an adaptive and automated calibration process. But how can you implement a digital process when faced with issues such as budget restrictions\, overextended IT resources\, and regulatory uncertainties. \n“Digitalization” is often overused\, but one way to look at it in the industrial automation world is how to develop “Paperless Maintenance.” In this presentation\, Ned will perform a short demonstration of a 100% automated pressure calibration that results in a paperless “document” and walk you through how calibration and digitalization can be harmonized into one ecosystem. \nNed Espy is the Technical Director for Beamex Inc.\, and has been promoting calibration management with Beamex for over 20 years. Ned has helped develop best practices for calibration\, with a focus on pressure\, temperature and multivariable instruments. Ned teaches calibration best practices and provides technical support to end users and the Beamex sales team in North America. Beamex has been a recognized leader in calibration solutions and systems since 1975. Beamex customers include world renowned companies in pharmaceuticals\, metal processing\, and food production – to name a few. \nREGISTER \nTrung Nguyen\, ing. \nISA Montreal – President

SUMMARY:Industrial Networking – Securing Your Facility’s Communications
DESCRIPTION:It might sound cliché that cybersecurity is important in industrial environments\, but with the level of connectivity that started in the 1990s – industrial control systems (ICS) have never been more connected than they are today.  The good news is\, it’s easy to find the right network equipment\, but the harder part is deploying them or re-architecting networks. \nSo\, for the audience\, at work or conferences you might hear phases or terminology such as: the Perdue model\, network layers\, ISA95\, ISA/IEC62443\, Deep-Packet-Inspection (DPI)\, NAT routers\, industrial firewalls\, network threats\, and “passive anomaly detection”.  But what does it all mean to you?  Does it add more risk than security or is it a fundamental part of any project (including building machine skids or cells)?  If you program PLCs\, write ladder logic\, engineer solutions\, or are a facilities electrician – this session is for both you and other experts (including networking professionals). \nThis session will introduce the audience to: \n• The basics of industrial networking and packets\n• Network layers and Purdue model/ISA95 reference architectures\n• ISA/IEC 62443 network security concepts (zones and conduits)\n• Deep-Packet-Inspection vs. other networking devices (including firewalls)\n• Industrial wireless\, OPC/UA Gateways\, and Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT)\n• Modern reference network designs that include security by design and common gotchas\n• Where/how network-based risk can be mitigated to tolerable levels \n— \nAnd with time permitting\, we would do a demo of a Modbus TCP/IP slave/master communication\, review of transmitted packets with Wireshark\, and an exhibit using an industrial network firewall to enforce Read-Only access on a simulated PLC. \nSee the recording of the presentation on Youtube \nPRESENTATION \nTrung Nguyen \nISA Montreal – President

SUMMARY:Top 20 Secure PLC Coding Practices
DESCRIPTION:Industrial Control Systems (ICS also referred to as OT or Operational Technology\, consisting of SCADA\, PLC\, DCS etc.) have historically been insecure by design. Several years into customizing and applying best practices from IT gave rise to secure protocols\, use of encryption\, network segmentation & isolation etc. However\, there has not been much focus on using the characteristic features in the PLCs and DCS for security\, or how to code/program PLCs with security in mind. This project – inspired by existing Secure Coding Practices for IT – fills that gap. The aim of this project is to provide guidelines to engineers that are creating software (ladder logic\, functional charts etc.) to help improve the security posture of Industrial Control Systems\, by leveraging the natively available functionality in the PLC/DCS/SCADA. Little or no additional software tools or hardware is needed to implement these practices. They can all be fit into the normal PLC programming and operating workflow. More than security expertise\, good knowledge of the PLCs to be protected\, their logic\, and the underlying process\, is needed for implementing these practices. \nUsing these practices always has security benefits – mostly either reducing the attack surface or enabling faster troubleshooting if a security incident were to happen. But many practices have more benefits than “only” security. Some also make PLC code more reliable\, easier to debug and maintain\, easier to communicate\, and potentially also leaner. Also\, the secure PLC coding practices not only help users in Incident Response in the event of a malicious attack but also make PLC code more robust to withstand accidental misconfiguration or human error. Note that there were some additional practices around Power Management\, I/O configuration etc. that were collected as part of the project that didn’t make it to the list as they were not coding practices\, but nevertheless useful in improving the security posture. This talk will give an overview of the project and the practices.” \nPresentation : 20220505 ISA Montreal Chapter \nYoutube of recorded presentation \nSpeakers are Jake Brodsky (https://www.linkedin.com/in/jakebrodsky/) & Vivek Ponnada (https://www.linkedin.com/in/1ot/).

SUMMARY:[:en]Want to be a hero? Know how to justify an optimisation project and make it happen![:]
DESCRIPTION:It is generally accepted that the health of process control\, including PID loops and advanced control like model predictive control (MPC)\, fuzzy logic control (FLC) and other expert systems has a direct impact on a plant performance and profitability. This is why  a typical control optimization project will lead to quick benefits with minimal investment. In an era of worldwide uncertainties\, some plants are struggling to meet increasing demand while other needs to maximize their efficiency to maintain benefits as demand decline. No matter what is your challenge\, optimizing process control is one of the key to success. If you are concerned with such thing as energy usage\, product quality and variability\, better throughput and faster start-ups\, then control optimization is for you. \n  \nBut saying so is not enough.
